James Baer was killed while responding to a fire at a large manufacturing building on the east side of the Miami and Erie canal, between Second and Third Streets. He was a pipeman stationed at the Webster Street hose house. He was hurled from the hose wagon at the turn of Second and Webster Streets while enroute to the fire and received fatal injuries. He was 45 years old.
He is buried in Woodland Cemetery.
